There was a small puddle of sick next to the bed, slowly soaking into the carpet. Had I left it a while longer before coming up, there would have been no trace of it other than the stench hanging in the air; a foul mixture of stomach bile and shit. A smell that - for some reason - reminds me of raw mince. Looking at the vomit, I sighed. I guess she wasn’t able to keep it all down after all. Still, I won’t discipline her. It doesn’t seem fair. Bit like when a puppy does something bad; you don’t tell them off unless you catch them in the act. If you do, they just get confused and scared. Both when you’re dealing with a puppy and with a woman such as Michelle - especially with what I am asking of her… Discipline would be a backwards step.

‘Did you want some water?’ I asked her.

I was playing both roles in the Good Cop, Bad Cop scenario. Last time I came in here, I was an asshole and - this time - I’m the nice guy. Can only imagine the taste in her mouth; the heavy bitterness of faeces mixed with the sour flavourings of the vomit - retched up from the depths of the gut.

She didn’t answer me.

‘It’s not a trick question. Did you want a glass of water?’

‘Water or urine?’ she asked - refusing to look me in the eyes.

‘Water.’

She didn’t answer again.

‘You agree to make this film with me and this can all stop,’ I reminded her.

‘I’m not helping you.’

I sat down on the edge of the bed, despite not being invited to do so. I sat there in silence for a moment unsure of how best to proceed. I didn’t understand what her problem was. This was a way out for her and she gets to be the star. Why would she not want to take it? What - does she want to end up like one of the other film stars? An extra - killed off and easily forgotten?

I decided to be direct, ‘Why won’t you help?’ I asked a second question without giving her a chance to answer the first, ‘What have you honestly got to lose?’

‘You want me to love you. You want me to convince you to stop killing people, stop making these movies - and be with me instead?’

‘In a nut-shell.’

‘I don’t want people thinking I love a psychopath.’

I didn’t say anything. What the hell could I say to that?

I sighed, ‘I’ll get you a glass of water.’

I didn’t wait to hear whether she wanted it or not. Instead, I turned and walked from the room - pulling the door shut behind me before I found myself saying something stupid that both of us would regret.
